In reading this year, the students will read and study six different novels. In addition, students will engage in reading short stories, participate in book clubs,  and they will read and write during a poetry unit.  Students will learn different literary elements and skills throughout each novel. A list of reading skills to accompany each novel will be listed on our class website on a weekly basis.

The novels students will read and study this year are listed below. It is very important that students  DO NOT read these books ahead of time. Please wait until we read them together in our reading class.

  • Restart by: Gordon Korman
  • Tuck Everlasting by: Natalie Babbitt
  • The Angel Tree by: Daphne Benedis-Grab
  • Hidden Figures by: Margot Lee Shetterly
  • Al Capone Does My Shirts by: Gennifer Choldenko

Accelerated Reader (AR)

AR is a computerized reading program that is supplemental to our Reading series and helps teachers manage and monitor a student's independent reading.  Students in grades 1-8 are given the STAR Reading Inventory which determines their Independent Reading Level (IRL).

Teachers will meet with each student to come up with an appropriate goal and a plan for meeting that goal each quarter.

AR is meant to help encourage students to read independently books of their choice.

We will send home a mid-quarter update to keep you informed of your child’s progress.

Students may take quizzes on computers in their classrooms (desktops, iPads, Chromebooks) or in the school library or computer lab.  Contact your child's Reading/Literature teacher for more information on how Accelerated Reader is used in your child's classroom.

To monitor your child's progress towards their AR goal, log onto the Home Connect website.  To access your child's information, you will need the user name and password that your child uses when he/she takes an AR quiz.  Please contact Mrs. Ryle to request your child's AR username and password.
