Tips for a Great Year
  • If an assignment is turned in late, a student will not receive above 80% as a penalty for his/her late work.

  • Chapter review notes - should be kept in your binder until the test date. I will give you a completion grade for this work.

  • Vocabulary notes  - should be kept in your binder so that you can use them to study for the test. They will be graded on the day they are due in class.

  • If you miss a quiz/assignment, it is your responsibility to come to me to take it/to show me the completed work. Your score will show up as IC in Gradelink until it is graded.

  • Late Work does not always get updated quickly on Gradelink. Thank you for being patient with me!

Lessons:   Each chapter is divided into lessons and taught with storytelling in class (with a Google slideshow), short videos, class handouts/notes, and reading selections/charts/maps from the textbook chapters.

Notes: We may skip around with written work in textbook pages. I will try and predict important info. for a test/quiz & have students mark it or highlight the info. After each lesson, students may review with "chapter notes".  Depending on the lesson, students may fill in the blanks to retell the chapter's story.  Students will use their textbook or slideshow to find answers.

Quizzes:  After each lesson, students will receive a short 5-question "Check in" Quiz.

  •  to ensure effort & understanding/listening in class

  • all quizzes will be open book in order for students to find "proof or evidence" in their thinking.

  • all concepts will be previously discussed during instruction in class. (And, sometimes even highlighted in their books!)

  • typically a quiz involves 3 vocab. questions & 2 multiple-choice questions.

  • may involve Skill Comprehension that is difficult to "study for", but more about applying what we reviewed/practiced in class.  For example: Reading a map (using a scale on a map).

Tests: After a chapter is finished, a Review/Study Guide is checked over in class.  Students will then expect 2 assessments to follow - vocab. & content.

  • 1.  Vocab. tests: usually matching or fill in the blank (using the word in context)

  • 2.  Content tests: usually multiple choice, skills (such as understanding a chart or cause & effect, map skill application), and/or short answers written in complete sentences

ProjectsStudents will expect a project or two of some sort to extend their learning of the unit.  Some will be done in class, for homework, independently or sometimes with a partner.

Classwork:  Skill Application, Map Skills, Current Events, Online Practice, Comprehension questions. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR CHAPTER NOTES & VOCAB. NOTES SAFE.  You will turn any chapter review notes in for credit (points) at the end of EACH chapterDo not throw away your work.

Google Classroom:  All Slideshows will be shared on Google Classroom for each chapter.  To easily access any needed materials, use the "topic" tab in Google Classroom to find the particular chapter we are studying.
